Yoga

Fists Forward Bend

fist_forward

Stand with feet hip-distance apart. Bend your knees and release your torso over your legs until your belly touches your thighs (or as close as you can get). Make two fists and place them in the opposite elbow creases. Relax your back, neck and head, and squeeze fists actively.

Fists and bent elbows together are a central nervous system trigger that causes your back muscles to open. You’ll feel it after just a few breaths!

Take 10-20 breaths here, releasing more tension from the back with every exhale.

Wall Plank

wall_plank

Stand in front of a wall at arm’s length. Reach forward from your shoulders and plant your palms on the wall, fingers wide, middle fingers pointing straight at the ceiling.

Firm your fingers into the wall and draw your navel back as you lengthen the tailbone towards the floor. Lift your ribs from the pelvis. You want to work with a natural lower back curve but an active belly.

Keep length in your spine as you begin to walk the legs back, folding at the waist, and walking your hands down the wall. Eventually you’ll come to an L-shape as seen here. If you can’t get there today without feeling pain or rounding in the lower back, bend your knees and maintain the proper spinal alignment.

As you lift the navel and lower ribs into the body, reach long through the tailbone and legs into the floor while reaching the spine, arms and head towards the wall.

Repeat for 10-20 breaths, then fold into Fists Forward Fold once again. Move to the next pose after a few breaths.

Downward-Facing Dog

down_ward

If done properly, this tried-and true asana can be excellent for spinal traction and back health.

Move into the pose with feet hip-distance apart [did you know that’s only two fists-width or so?] and hands shoulder-distance apart. It’s important not to let your back arch too much, which pressurizes the shoulder joints and over-contracts the back muscles. Instead, think of lifting the navel and front ribs, providing a buoyancy in the shoulders and back. Carve the tailbone towards the heels and press back through the inner and outer legs equally. This provides a root, a backward grounding from which you can pull and grow your spine and head forward towards the space between your hands.

Even as you move the shoulders down the back and wrap your outer shoulder blades towards your armpits slightly, press long through the arms and fingers, providing a whole-body realignment and stretch.

Take 5-10 breaths here, then proceed to the next pose.

Pigeon

Pigeon

We should call this pose “Angel of Mercy” for what it can do to rescue your poor aching back. It’s genius at opening the lower body muscles like hamstrings, hip rotators and the iliopsoas muscles, all which can contribute to back pain, without putting too much torque on the already tight back muscles. This releases them by springing open the muscles beneath. It’s a must-do in my yoga sequencing.

From Downward-Facing Dog, bring your right knee behind the right wrist, foot either touching the left hip crease or slightly forward. Stretch the left leg out long behind you, knee and top of the foot facing the floor. Center your hips in space even if they don’t touch the floor. Press your palms into the floor or a yoga block, ground your legs into the mat, and allow your legs to stretch while you let your low back curve and lift up.

Draw your navel and pelvic floor muscles in and send your heart to the sky. To deepen this pose, move your front knee wider and back and creep the back leg longer.

Take 5-10 breaths here, then fold forward, forearms on a block or the floor for a full-body stretch to counter pose  Return to Downward-Facing Dog, then repeat on the other side.

Back Traction Pose

back_traction

After your last Pigeon, swing your back leg around and come onto your back, knees bent, feet under knees as if to prepare for a Bridge Pose. Grab your yoga block or if you don’t have one, a firmly-rolled yoga mat will do.

Lift your hips, and place the block in the center of your hips (not low back). The block should be the skinny way, in the same direction as your spine, not wide across the hips like your pants line.

Place your hips on the block and gently walk your feet wide. Knock your knees in towards one another for one minute to stretch across the sacrum, and then walk feet and knees together. Lift your knees over your hips until you can relax them but still stay suspended in the air.

This pose will release your iliopsoas muscles even as it detoxes you and provides traction for the low back spine. After about 30 seconds or so, scoot your head further from the shoulders and rest for another 30 seconds. Return to the first variation, feet wide on the floor, knees closer, for a few breaths.

To release, walk the feet under the knees at hip distance. Engage your navel, lift your hips off the block and remove it to the side. Roll slowly down the spine inch by inch and enjoy your new spacious lower back curve and sacrum!

Child’s Pose

child_pose

Roll over and take Child’s Pose for one minute or more. Try knees wide, big toes closer, but end with knees together for a neutral spinal stretch. If your head doesn’t touch the floor, place a yoga block or fists under your forehead so you can relax completely.

  •  Cover the wound with a clean cloth, sterile dressing, or sanitary napkin.
  •  Place your hand over the dressing and press firmly.
  • Keep pressure on the dressing to stop the bleeding. If blood soaks through the dressing, do not remove it. Apply more dressing and continue to apply pressure until the bleeding stops.

Wildlife Services (WS) have found that spraying either cinnamon oil or clove oil on a snake will make it vacate the area. Generally, the snake will slither in the opposite direction of the spray or to a sheltered area; therefore avoid spraying the snake from behind in case it retreats in your direction.
  • This repellent is non-toxic, but before making the repellent remember to put on a mask covering your nose and mouth because sulphur smells .

  • One of the simplest exercises is the leg slide, which involves lying on your back with feet flat on the floor and your knees pointing up to the ceiling. Contract your stomach muscles and inhale as you slowly slide your right foot away.
  • Keep your foot flat on the floor and, when you can no longer do this, slowly start to slide your foot back to the start position, exhaling as you do so. Repeat on the opposite leg, aiming for at least five slides on each side.
  • Cancernet notes that these exercises not only strengthen the deep abdominal muscles, but can also improve muscle tone around the anus. This is helpful if you suffer from piles as, in extreme cases, the enlarged blood vessels can protrude outside your anal passage.
  • Stronger anal muscles can prevent the vessels from popping out. To find your pelvic floor muscles, imagine you are trying to stop urinating and passing wind at the same time. You should feel a tightening around your anus and between your thighs, but be sure to keep your stomach, buttock and thigh muscles relaxed. To begin, contract your pelvic floor muscles for five seconds then relaxing them for five seconds. Repeat at least five times and gradually build the hold time to 10 seconds.
  •  Once you’ve mastered the slow repetitions, try quickly contracting and relaxing the muscles 10 times.

Or if it affects the very young, the elderly, or the chronically ill, it can be dangerous. Allergies (Home Remedies)

alergy

If you have allergies, you may suffer from a stuffy and/or runny nose, sneezing, itchy skin and eyes, and/or red, watery eyes. Needless to say, it can be very uncomfortable. These symptoms occur because, in the presence of an allergen, the immune system releases chemicals called histamines to fight what it perceives as an invader. Home remedies for allergies can treat all of the above mentioned symptoms.

 Allergies – Diet

  • Drink lots of water to thin secretions and ease expectoration.
  • If you have respiratory allergies, you may be allergic to certain foods. In addition to dairy products and wheat, common culprits include eggs, chocolate, nuts, seafood, and citrus fruits and juices. Try eliminating one of these foods for two weeks and watch for an improvement. Use an elimination or rotation diet to discover and work with food allergies.
  • Try eliminating dairy foods from your diet. Dairy foods can thicken mucus and stimulate an increase in mucus production. If your allergies are seasonal, it may also be helpful to avoid whole wheat during the allergy season; many allergy sufferers are sensitive to wheat.
  • Cut out cooked fats and oils. When your body is under any type of stress, including the stress of an allergic reaction, the digestive system is not as strong as usual, and fats—which are difficult to digest at the best of times—can put a strain on the digestive system. Also, undigested fats contribute to mucus production and foster a toxic internal environment.

Skin allergy

Skin allergies are reactions of the body’s natural immune system against certain substances that may come into direct external contact with the skin or may have entered the system through food, water or air. Pollen, dust, smoke and dander are among the most common substances that cause allergies. Excessive dryness of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight also makes it prone to allergies. Sudden changes in weather may sometimes trigger skin allergies too. Contact with harmful chemicals present in certain detergents and soaps may also irritate the skin. It is advisable, therefore, to keep the use of cosmetic products to a minimum if you are prone to skin allergies, as they contain strong chemicals that might cause irritation to the skin.

Rather than spending a fortune for a flawless and glowing skin, try the following home remedies for skin allergies.

  • Sandalwood, when mixed with lime juice acts as a soothing agent in case of skin allergies.
  • Lemon juice is also useful in its mixture with coconut oil.
  • Lemon juice and poppy seeds are also effective in treating the itch and removing the redness of the area.
  • Since vitamin C is a very good remedy for skin allergy, an adequate amount must be taken to curb the disease.

Pollen allergy

  • Start by boiling the fruit only of one grapefruit and one lemon (remove all the peel) in one cup of water for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat, cool and then add 1 tablespoon of raw honey. Drink as needed for pollen allergy relief.
  • For a steam inhalation therapy, fill a metal bowl with hot water. Add 2 drops of eucalyptus oil and stir. Drape a towel over your head and then bend over the bowl and breathe in the vapors to loosen congestion and relieve the pressure on the sinuses. Warning: Do not use this method if you are taking homeopathic remedies also for relief. Eucalyptus oil will negate the effectiveness of homeopathic remedies. You can do a water only bath without the oil for a lesser amount of relief.
  • Increase your intake of all omega 3 fatty acids in your diet consistently. Diets high in omega 3’s aid your immune system which actually gives you better immunity to seasonal allergies, thus reducing the severity of a seasonal outbreak.
  • Familiarize yourself with food families. Many times if you are allergic to tree pollen, you may also have to avoid apples, cherries, peaches, pears, carrots, celery, apricots, kiwi and nuts until your symptoms clear up. For a ragweed sensitivity, avoiding bananas, melons, zucchini and cucumbers will give better relief.
  • Get in the habit of changing your furnace filters and air conditioner filters every single month, all year long, but especially the three months after high pollen seasons. Ragweed pollen especially becomes trapped in those filters as it is processed through the air into your heating and cooling units and ends up being pumped right back into your home for months after ragweed season. Thus, in essence, you are extending the season by many months just because of a dirty filter.
  • Have a friend, a neighbor or a relative rake up and remove all those fallen leaves in your yard. Piles of leaves are a breeding ground for mold. The longer they sit there, the longer your allergy symptoms will last.
  • Mix up 2 teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of raw honey (or stevia) into 6 oz of water and drink this 3 times daily for the next 5 days. The raw vinegar will break up the mucus to allow easier flow, thus relieving sinus pressure. Do not substitute regular bottled vinegar as you will not get the same results.
  • Every time you enter your home, remove your shoes at the door. Head straight for the shower, remove and wash your clothes and you must take a shower. Each time you walk in the door from outside you are a carrier of high pollen counts which you are carrying into your home.
  • Avoid most alcohols, beer and wines during allergy season. Sulfites in them will raise your congestion levels and this aggravates seasonal allergies to even greater symptoms.
  • Plant the exterior of your home predominantly with flowers, avoiding trees and bushes. Flowers rarely aggravate pollen allergies for most people.
  • Avoid carpeting in your home, especially the kitchen, bath and bedroom. All high traffic areas should be only hardwood floors or laminated flooring.
  • If you like them, add plenty of spicy foods to your daily diet Adding hot peppers, horseradish etc. keeps the mucous flowing naturally, thus preventing a lot of sinus pressure.
  • Try to add many of the following to your daily diet all year long to aid in allergen control. Citrus fruits, kale, broccoli, onions and garlic plus fresh parsley all have high concentrations of Vitamin C or carotenoids. The plant kingdom also gives us butterbur, stinging nettle and elderberries which all reduce inflammation and combat allergy symptoms. Work with a licensed practitioner at first to confirm dosages and the best treatment options for your allergens.
